What is Deep Tissue Massage?

Deep tissue massage is a therapeutic technique that concentrates on realigning the deeper layers of connective and muscle tissue. It targets adhesions and stiffness that build up due to stress and poor exercise habits.

Unlike typical relaxing Swedish massages, deep tissue massages are more intense with deep, sustained pressure resulting in lasting relief from discomfort and chronic muscle tension.

Benefits of Deep Tissue Massage

This type of deep massage offers a multitude of physical and mental benefits, making it the treatment of choice for various ailments. Our deep tissue massage therapy can:

  • Relieve tension and pain, especially in and related to neck and shoulder tension, lower back pain, plantar fasciitis, fibromyalgia, and sciatica
  • Soothe chronic pain, including treating the symptoms of arthritis
  • Improve blood flow and reduce blood pressure
  • Promote heart, lung, and immune system function
  • Increase mobility and improve posture
  • Support injury rehabilitation
  • Improve sleep quality

These benefits also contribute to improved mental health. Physical health and discomfort greatly affect mental health, so alleviating pain and improving relaxation lead to a more balanced, positive mental state.

Deep tissue massage, including our signature DEEP tissue massage experience, reduces physical stress and encourages relaxation to foster both physical and mental wellbeing.

Is Deep Tissue Massage Right For You?

Deep tissue massage is the preferred therapeutic massage to treat chronic pain and deeper muscle soreness. Whether from stress or injury, muscle strain and discomfort can be alleviated by a deep tissue massage focused on soothing the underlying layers of connective tissue and muscle. If you suffer from muscle aches and pain, this type of massage will offer much needed relief.

Deep tissue massage is generally safe during pregnancy, although prenatal massages typically employ Swedish massage techniques for a gentler, more relaxing experience. Many therapists recommend against massages during the first trimester when there is a greater risk of injury to the fetus. As with any condition, please consult with your doctor and communicate your specific needs to your therapist.

- Deep Tissue Massage FAQ -

Does a Deep Tissue Massage Hurt?

Deep tissue massages can be uncomfortable since massage therapists must apply enough pressure to reach and relax deep muscles and tissue. Slight pain is normal as a therapist works through stiff areas.

Most clients call this a “hurts so good” kind of pain because they can feel their muscles loosening and receiving more blood flow to the areas.

Our therapists tailor their treatment to each client’s preferences and can adjust their technique and pressure for maximum comfort.

What Can You Wear During a Deep Tissue Massage?

It is customary to completely disrobe for a full body massage. You will be draped properly during the massage with a sheet and a blanket, only exposing the area being worked on. However, you may undress to your comfort level. We will do our best to work around any clothing you choose to leave on.

Note: If you are having any low back or hip pain it is optimal to remove undergarments so that your therapist will have access to your hips & gluts, as these areas are almost always part of the problem and require attention for optimal results and relief.

How Long Will the Deep Tissue Massage Last?

That is up to you as the client, but we do have some suggestions for those interested in our suggestion:

For overall relaxation: 50, 80, or 110 mins (basically any amount of time will work it’s up to you, but once you’re laying there you will probably wish it to go on longer)

For troubleshooting problem areas we suggest:

  • 50mins – Best for targeted work on one area and brushing over the rest of the posterior side of the body. Often there isn’t enough time to thoroughly address issues and cover the whole body in this amount of time, both you and the therapist will feel rushed with less than optimal results.
  • 80mins – Great for targeted work on one area and then continuing on for a full-body massage OR targeted work on two areas and brushing over the rest of the posterior side of the body.
  • 110mins – The sky is the limit here, pick areas to focus on and or just lay back and relax the time away.

What Are the Top Signs That a Deep Tissue Massage Is Needed?

This massage is recommended to treat muscle soreness, tightness, and chronic pain. Whether discomfort stems from long-term conditions, acute injury, or simply day-to-day stress, all kinds of muscle and tissue pain can be soothed with a deep tissue treatment.

Can a Deep Tissue Massage Make You Sick?

Since deep tissue massages increase blood flow to deliver nutrients and remove toxins from the body, nausea is a potential side effect. Symptoms of an upset stomach may last for a few hours and can be treated with rest and hydration.

Is Deep Tissue Massage Good for You?

In addition to immediately reducing pain and treating injury, deep tissue massages have lasting positive health benefits. They increase blood flow, thereby reducing blood pressure and improving heart, lung, and immune system function. They also recover mobility by loosening the muscles. The reduction of physical pain and improvement of body function both contribute to positive mental health benefits.

Can Deep Tissue Massage on Feet Break Fascia?

No, deep tissue massage will not break up fascia. Plantar fasciitis occurs when the thick band of tissue connecting the heel to the toes, called the fascia, is inflamed. The fascia should not be broken with massage; it is simply inflamed and in need of relief.

Our deep tissue massage treats plantar fasciitis by increasing blood flow and loosening up the fascia as well as the surrounding muscles and tendons so they can return to their normal posture.

Is Deep Tissue Massage Safe After Injury?

Yes, it is safe after injury. In fact, a deep tissue massage can accelerate healing by improving circulation and increasing oxygen in the blood. We recommend letting the injury heal for two or three days before coming for a massage, and we ask that you please tell your therapist about the injury and maintain open communication during the massage.

Is It Okay to Get a Deep Tissue Massage Regularly?

Yes. The frequency of massages will depend on the reason for seeking treatment and each individual’s body. We recommend getting deep tissue massages twice a week for injury recovery, once every two weeks for stress relief, and once a month for general wellness. Always let your body recover in between massages and do not seek treatment until soreness dissipates.

Is Getting a Deep Tissue Massage After Doing Yoga Beneficial?

Yes, it is greatly beneficial and will enhance the benefits of both practices. Deep tissue massages after yoga will help reduce lactic acid to hasten recovery while encouraging muscles to stay stretched and relaxed, increasing the flexibility gained from yoga.

Does a Deep Tissue Massage Help With Lower Back Pain?

Yes, a deep tissue massage can substantially help with lower back pain. Studies show that the majority of patients experience relief from lower back pain after a deep tissue massage as it relieves tension in the deeper layers of muscles in the lower back and connective tissue to reduce tightness and pain.
